Eminem Biography
In his own words from his song, "I'm Back" from the megasuccessful album
The Marshall Mathers LP, Eminem explains: "You think of my name now whenever you say, "Hi," became a commodity because I'm W-H-I-T-E, and MTV was so friendly to me."
Marshall Bruce Mathers III made the most unlikely rise in the history of the music industry, he, a young white male, became the most powerful and successful man in the rap genre. Armed with biting, witty lyrics, Eminem ascension, descent, and rebirth in the music industry is no surprise. His bleached blonde hair, his tattoos, and his appeal to a legion of disgruntled young white males made him an icon.
Mathers released an independent record in 1995, Infinite and followed it up with The Slim Shady EP in 1997. Somehow the records found their way to legendary hip-hop producer Dr. Dre who immediately started collaborating with the angry blonde. With Dre's guidance, Eminem released The Slim Shady LP with Aftermath/Interscope Records. Eminem's debut did not go unnoticed with the MTV generation. The hit singles My Name is and Guilty Conscience, a collaboration with Dr. Dre, made Eminem an instant star. No one hit wonder, his talent was obvious. Not only did he find massive commercial success through other quility tracks including Brain Damage, Rock Bottom, and Cum on Everybody, but he was getting great reviews.
Eminem rocked the house throughout Warped Tour later that year and the record label recognized him as a legitimate star, even giving him his own label, Shady Records, which would later launch the career of shady's protege Curtis Jackson, better known as 50 Cent.
It wasn't critical appeal that Eminem sought though, on his follow-up record, The Marshall Mathers LP, Eminem asks: "You think I give a damn about a Grammy? Half of you critics can't even stomach me, let alone stand me." Well, despite his lack of interest, Mathers would go on to win multiple grammys for what some critics call the greatest album in the history of rap. Mathers would later go on to win an Oscar as well, for his hit single Lose Yourself, the theme song from his semi-autobiographical film 8 Mile starring Mathers and Kim Basinger. Interestingly enough, Eminem actually won an Oscar before Martin Scorsese. With Eminem and Dr. Dre headlining, The Up in Smoke Tour was a huge success. Snoop Dogg and members of NWA, as well as the shady syndicate, including D12 aka Dirty Dozen, Xzibit, and Royce Da 5'9 made it one of the summer's biggest tours and Eminem tickets sold out in most major cities.
Slim Shady was back to his old antics with The Eminem Show, his third major release. Following up such an acclaimed album was no easy task and reviews of The Eminem Show were mixed. Like Run-DMC before him, Eminem combined the music of Aerosmith with hip-hop in an incredible track. Eminem's tour for The Eminem Show was a massive success and every tour stop left fans searching desperately for sold out eminem tickets. Eminem, of course, headlined and he was joined again by his Detroit clique, D12 but they added Busta Rhymes and the Dre R&B protege Truth Hurts to the fold.
Eminem's career took a dark turn sometime after The Eminem Show as the world's most famous blonde since Madonna became addicted to pain killers, sleeping pills, and whatever else he could find. He went through a much publicized reunion and subsequent separation from longtime love Kim Mathers and hit rock bottom. He spent 5 years addicted to drugs and not touring. He had all but fallen out of the music industry entirely. During that time, he released only one record, Encore, and ticket sales for his tour were dissappointing.
Luckily for Eminem fans, he pulled himself back together in 2008. As of April 20, 2009, Eminem has been sober for a year. In and interview on his sirius radio station, Shade 45, Eminem alerted fans he was back to getting his high from hip-hop and was finally writing again. On May 19, 2009, he released his fifth album, Relapse.
Eminem's Relapse is getting solid reviews and it appears the controversial rapper is ready to tour again.
